Major Google Drive Update: Blessing for IT Teams?

In upcoming editions of Google’s Workspace suite, administrators can now place shared drives into organizational units (OUs). Admins will now be able to establish sharing policies, data regions, and access management at a granular level. Therefore, This Google Drive Update might benefit IT teams working with Google Drive cloud storage.

For instance, This feature is now accessible as an open beta. As a result, you can use it without signing up for a program.

One month ago, Google also rollout Automatic Password Updater for users.

What does Google Drive update mean for Users?

All shared disks are now located in the “root” OU. Therefore are subject to the same regulations. On the other hand, this update gives administrators greater options regarding cloud storage management.

Admins can transfer shared drives to sub-OUs inside their organizations, such as “Marketing” or “Legal.” According to Google, this gives them additional control over the privacy and security of the shared drive’s contents on a case-by-case basis.

For example, because a shared drive belonging to the legal department includes extremely secret material, administrators can restrict access to it.

Furthermore, Google claims that this allows IT teams more control over applying default sub-OUs to newly formed shared drives. As a result, It ensures that each new shared drive is subject to the proper cloud backup security policies.

How to Get Started with Google Drive Update?

Admins can use the new “Organizational Unit” column in “Apps > Google Workspace > Drive and Docs > Manage Shared Drives” to assign shared drives to various OUs.

Users can learn more about shared drives (opens in a new tab). As a result, manage shared drive users and activity by visiting Google’s Help Center (opens in a new tab).

But this feature is not available for Google Workspace Business Starter, Enterprise Essentials, Frontline, or legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers.

Conclusion

Google has always been the company that has not gone where the ball was but went where the ball was going to be. With this update, they are trying to justify the tagline they have always received, “The most creative company“.
