Developers Preview of Android 13 is already out in February 2022. This new version of Android is packed with features like Runtime Notifications, Multi-User Contactless NFC Payments, and many more. However, we can also observe some awesome and exciting minor changes this time. Android 13 Features Flashlight Brightness Controller, which is expected to provide control over their flashlight intensity to all Android OEMs.
Here is an official statement from Esper’s Mishaal Rahman that Android 13 digs in two new APIs. CameraManager class — getTorchStrengthLevel and turnOnTorchWithStrengthLevel.
Android Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL)
Rahman also mentioned that all the Android devices might not be able to take advantage of this feature because of the camera hardware limitation. If you are unaware of the camera hardware abstraction layer (HAL), it’s a bridge that enables the proper connection of different APIs (Application Programming Interface) to your hardware. Although, for now, Pixel 6 fulfills all the requirements for this feature, new flagships will inevitably be able to use brightness control for their flashlight, but old phones may not get these features.
Google plans to set a limitation, and future Android phones should support the camera hardware abstraction layer (HAL). Therefore, every future smartphone could have 100% support for Android 13 features.
Sum Up
So, if you want to have complete control with your flashlight, Android 13 will satisfy you. If you use Apple or Samsung smartphones, you should enjoy those features. Other OEMs should include a camera hardware abstraction layer (HAL) support to get Android 13 approval from Google.
